Global Green Bank Support
Green Bank Network
CGC, in partnership with NRDC, serves as the co-secretariat to the global Green Bank Network (GBN). The GBN is a membership organization, presently with 8 member Green Banks, that serves as a central hub for information collection and dissemination on Green Bank best practices. The GBN provides newsletters, webinars and other online resources to support green finance initiatives. The GBN also hosts the annual Green Bank Congress, the premier international gathering of Green Banks and partners from around the world. The GBN, launched at COP21 in Paris, is currently expanding to incorporate new members and build additional partnerships.
Green Bank Design Summit
CGC joined with partners in organizing a first-of-a-kind global Green Bank forum – the Green Bank Design Summit. Signaling a shift in global climate politics, 24 developing countries representing 27% of global GDP and 44% of global carbon emissions came together to craft a new model for advancing clean energy investment. The Summit was hosted by the AFD in Paris on March 18-19, 2019 and sponsored by the ClimateWorks Foundation, the Stanley Foundation and others.
Examples of CGC Global Green Bank Workshops and Convenings
OECD Forum on Green Finance & Investment, Annual COP Sessions & Related Events – CGC has a long-standing partnership with the OECD and has organized Green Bank sessions at the OECD’s annual Forum on Green Finance & Investment, a global gathering on innovative clean energy finance. CGC was a contributing author to the OECD’s seminal Green Bank white paper 2016, and serves on the Board of the OECD’s new Centre on Green Finance and Investment. CGC speaks regularly on the topic of Green Banks around the world, including the annual UNFCCC COP gathering to advance global climate goals.
Indonesia – In 2018 CGC began working with the Asian Development Bank (ADB) to advance its Green Finance Catalyzing Facility (GFCF) concept. The GFCF concept outlines potential options around local green finance institutions, with a design similar to green banks that are empowered with a mandate and a balance sheet to crowd-in private investment in green projects. In 2018 CGC partnered with ADB to execute a hands-on green finance roundtable, “Catalyzing Green Finance: The Role of Government Facilities & Innovative Finance Instruments,” in Jakarta, Indonesia. The event was co-hosted by ADB and PT Sarana Multi Infrastruktur (PT SMI) and showcased leading examples of green finance facilities and green banks working to drive new levels of investment in green projects.
Latin America – In 2017, CGC, in its role as co-secretariat of the Green Bank Network, partnered with the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), OECD, NRDC, Banobras and the Latin American Association of Development Financing Institutions (ALIDE) to host a hands-on workshop in Mexico City, focused on Green Banks and National Development Banks across Latin America. As an outcome of that work, CGC has consulted with a number of National Development Banks in Latin American on green investment policies and programs, GCF strategies, and blended green finance vehicles.
